Butch Ward: Acknowledge your bias and improve your coverage

In this interactive session, participants navigate the intersection of “the journalist” and “the journalism” to discuss how their own beliefs can affect their coverage of someone else’s faith. Butch talks about his own experiences as a reporter and editor, and about how to recognize and manage one’s own biases when reporting on subjects outside of our experience or expertise.

Butch Ward is the managing director and a faculty member of The Poynter Institute. A journalist for 27 years at The Philadelphia Inquirer and the Baltimore News-American, Butch served stints as managing editor at both newspapers.
