Poll data: Pew and MTSU Poll

Dr. Gregory Smith of the Pew Institute presented data from their 2007 survey of American Muslims, the first of its kind. Here is the Institute’s 2011 survey of American Muslims, released shortly after the conference: Muslim American survey.

Dr. Jason Reineke of the MTSU poll also presented survey results: Who in Tennessee thinks the Constitution doesn’t protect Islam?

Dr. Gregory Smith is a senior researcher at the Pew Research Center’s Forum on Religion & Public Life, specializing in survey research, religion and public opinion, religion and American politics and Catholic politics. Greg holds a Ph.D. in government from the University of Virginia. His doctoral dissertation on the influence of priests on the voting behavior and political attitudes of American Catholics won the 2006 Aaron Wildavsky Award, which is given by the American Political Science Association for the best dissertation in religion and politics. His book, Politics in the Parish: The Political Influence of Catholic Priests, was published by Georgetown University Press in 2008.

Previously, Greg was a fellow at the University of Virginia Center on Religion and Democracy. Greg is also a contributor to the Encyclopedia of American Political Parties and Elections. His work has appeared in the Journal for the Scientific Study of Religion and has been presented at national and regional conferences.

Dr. Jason Reineke is an assistant professor at the MTSU School of Journalism. Dr. Reineke holds masters and doctoral degrees in Journalism and Communication from The Ohio Sate University. He is associate director for the MTSU Poll, a once-a-semester telephone poll measuring the opinions of residents living in the 39 counties that constitute Middle Tennessee. Dr. Reineke’s research and teaching interests are focused mainly on public opinion and political communication, especially involving freedom of expression and support for censorship, as well as research methods and statistical analysis.

Dr. Reineke presents the results of the MTSU Poll on Tennesseans’ attitudes toward Islam and the Murfreesboro mosque controversy. The poll found that opposition to the mosque’s construction was in the minority.
