MTSU Office of News and Media Relations
The Office of News and Media Relations accepts serious students who need a practicum experience to fulfill their requirements. Typically these students are English, Journalism or Public Relations majors. A candidate for a practicum in this office will take a news writing test and an AP style test and must demonstrate excellent writing skills, editing savvy and attention to details in order to be accepted. A practicum student in this office will attend a weekly planning meeting and may be asked to work a few hours a week in the NPA office. Finally, the nature of the work in the NPA office requires the student to be a self-starter and to take the initiative to seek out stories, schedule appointments, conduct interviews and meet story deadlines. Good work habits such as punctuality, dependability, a positive and professional attitude and an openness to criticism and direction are paramount. Sidelines
Sidelines, an editorially independent newspaper, provides coverage of news of interest to its primary demographic target: MTSU students, faculty and staff. The newspaper offers journalism students an opportunity to write and report for a twice-weekly publication. The perfect practicum candidates will be curious about the world, eager to learn new skills and understand the importance of a news outlet to our community. While knowing AP style, understanding how to conduct a news interview and experience working under deadline pressure would be preferable, Sidelines’ mission is to train the next generation of journalists. So we’ll train enthusiastic volunteers. Practicum students can expect to be assigned stories, work on the newspaper’s website and⁄or be assigned to the copy desk. Publications of The University Honors College
The University Honors College has three publications, Honors Edition magazine, Collage: A Journal of Creative Expression, and Scientia et Humanitas, which are options for students seeking one-credit hour practicums. Students must have at least a 3.25 GPA and must be accurate and detail-oriented.
A practicum with Honors Edition magazine would involve writing articles about Honors events, students, faculty, and alumni; gathering information for articles; photographing Honors events; and possibly editing images for the magazine in Photoshop.
Collage: A Journal of Creative Expression is an arts and literary magazine, and provides opportunities for students who are interested in gaining experience in publishing, especially related to editing or design. The student staff evaluates approximately 300 submissions of prose, poetry, photography, and art each semester and prepares selected work for publication. Design students create publicity flyers and design the entire 32-page magazine using Adobe InDesign.
Scientia et Humanitas is an journal of student research and provides an opportunity for students to review and/or edit research articles, to design the yearly issue of the journal in InDesign, or to format and upload submitted student research articles to the Scientia et Humanitas website using Dreamweaver.

MTSU Department of Health and Human Performance
The Department of Health and Human Performance offers a 1-credit hour Practicum experience to a School of Journalism student. Student must be detailed oriented, creative, and experienced in Microsoft Publisher, Word, Moviemaker or equivalent. The assignment would involve updating all departmental brochures as well as a presentation to be shown for recruiting purposes at state, regional, and national conventions. Additionally, a tri-fold display board used by the department at conventions and conferences needs to be updated. This will encompass effectively communicating a significant amount of information since the department’s undergraduate programs lead to the Bachelor of Science degree with majors in Athletic Training, Exercise Science, Health Education, Physical Education, and Recreation and Leisure Services; The department also offers two Master of Science degrees: one with a major in Health, Physical Education, and Recreation with concentrations in Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Sport Management and one with a major in Exercise Science; And the department also offers a Ph.D. in Human Performance with specializations in five areas: Exercise Science, Health, Kinesmetrics, Leisure Studies, and Physical Education. MTSU Athletics Blue Raiders Sports
Office Intern
Applicants must be willing to commit to working a minimum of one semester. The student office assistant internship is unpaid. Interested students should send resumes to internships@goblueraiders.com.
Areas of Responsibility
• Assist the Athletic Communications staff with day to day operations
• Archive news clippings from local and national media outlets
• Assist with mailing, filing and copy projects as needed
• Complete research projects as assigned
• Assist with weekly press conferences and other media events
• Must be available a minimum of five hours per week
• Other duties as assigned
Basic Qualifications
• Must be a current Middle Tennessee student in good academic standing
• Possess an interest or background in sports
• Must be a motivated self-starter willing to learn new skills
Additional/Desired Qualifications
• Knowledge of athletics (sport-specific rules, protocol, etc.)
• Good verbal and written communication skills

Gameday Intern
Applicants must be willing to commit to working a minimum of one semester. Game-day Student Interns assist Athletic Communications sport contacts with various pre-game, in-game and post-game activities. The game day internship is unpaid. Areas of Responsibility
• Assist sport contact with all necessary set-up duties (day before and/or day of contest)
• Print and distribute box scores to appropriate individuals during and post-contest
• Calculate in-game statistics (sport-specific)
• Acquire and document post-game quotes (coaches & players from both teams)
• Video post-game press conferences (sport-specific)
• Various post-game duties (sport-specific) such as collecting of placards, filling of beverage cooler, etc.
• Other duties as assigned
Basic Qualifications
• Must be a current Middle Tennessee student in good academic standing
• Must be willing to support ALL home games (we field 17 varsity sports)
Additional/Desired Qualifications
• Knowledge of athletics (sport-specific rules, protocol, etc.)
• Motivated, self starter
• Good verbal and written communication skills
