I’m a graphic artist and designer with more than twenty-five years’ experience producing information graphics and illustrations for print and online publications. I’m also a professor in the MTSU School of Journalism and Strategic Media’s Visual Communication concentration, where I teach graphics applications, front-end web development, print and web design, and visual journalism.
Work Methods
The examples on this site were created through a variety of media both analog and digital, from pencils and paint brushes to graphic and 3D-modeling software. The choice of media depends in large part on the subject matter: 3D modeling is effective for architecture and machines, whereas drawings are better for organic subjects. The final products are assembled in graphics software and delivered in digital form. The web and interactive sites are all custom coded (as is this site).
A lot of the work shown here was done for three US newspapers, The Seattle Times, the San Jose Mercury News and The Orange County Register. Newsrooms are highly collaborative operations and a lot of these examples were created through teamwork. In each case I have listed the names and roles of all who were involved.
Publication Design
My latest project was the production of a textbook on the history of communication technology. I did all research and writing, created all the graphics and illustrations, and designed and paginated the entire book, including the cover. It has 300 full-color pages with 181 graphics. It was published in April 2021 by Routledge/Taylor & Francis.
