Windows

Windows are also rated by the Energy Star program, as they are the weakest part of a home’s insulation, accounting for as much as 50 percent of heating and cooling loss. High performance windows use improved materials for glass coating and framing materials, and have double or even triple glazing.

Conventional Windows

• Lower initial cost but higher operating costs

• Poor to moderate heat and cold insulation

• Poor to moderate sound insulation

• Greater dependence on costly mechanical systems

• Poor UV blocking

High Performance Windows

• Higher initial cost but lower operating costs

• Better heat and cold insulation

• Better sound insulation

• Potential to downsize heating and cooling systems

• Less UV damage to fabrics, finishes
