VCOM 2950 Visual Communication Applications

Instructor: Phil Loubere

Illustrator Exercise 1

The second application we’re going to learn is Illustrator. Make sure that you have the Adobe software properly installed and that you can launch Illustrator. Then download the exercise folder:
- Illustrator exercise 1

Expand the compressed file. The folder contains three jpg images that will be used as templates. The procedure is described in the videos.

You can also download a short manual on Illustrator which covers all the tasks that we’re going to be doing: Setting up a new document in the correct color space, using the Pen Tool, applying color to strokes and fills, and pasting in front of and in back of other shapes.
- AI Manual

Then watch the four videos below, which will demonstrate how to use the application and how to complete the three parts of the exercise. You should open the Illustrator application and follow along, pausing the video when necessary.
The total length of the videos is about 23 minutes. You should plan on at least one and a half to two hours to complete the exercise.

NOTE: At times the videos may refer to exercises 1 to 3, and the second two templates shown are different than the ones you’ll be using. This is one exercise consisting of three parts, with two of the templates simplified from previous versions. In order to complete the exercise, you need to trace the three templates in three separate Illustrator documents, and submit the three Illustrator documents in a single folder.

After you've completed the exercise, make sure the three Illustrator documents you created are together in a folder. It’s not necessary to include the templates. There is no need to create a publication package as with InDesign, since the templates are not part of the finished work but were only used to trace.
Name the folder with your last name first: 'Yourname.ai1', zip compress the folder and drop it into the D2L dropbox.
